I am no longer using wood screws in the construction process, instead I am using a method of tying the framework together that is more authentic and is actually sturdier. The newer pieces also feature framework beautifully carved by beetles (shown below). Due to global warming the pine beetle has increased in numbers and has killed a huge portion of pines across Canada and the Western U.S. An amazing natural disaster caused by man. The beetles kill the pines by clogging the tree's internal system with a fungus which forever stains the wood blue. Called ''Denim Pine'' or ''Beetle Killed Pine'' the wood is being used in everything from log home construction to furniture manufacturing. Beautiful and unique, using this wood is actually a 'green' practice because there is such a surplus of the still useable dead pine. The pine beetles are not at this time out of control in my region, but there is enough of this beetle killed pine wood lying around on the forest floor to create a fire hazard. I collect it from the forest, dry it out and then finish it for lasting beauty. I think it adds to the global warming statement the Arctic series was created to speak of.

Wolf Sanctum Visit

Photography by Sandi Baker

Finally - Pictures of Rose!

rosie2

Initially Rose was concerned about the tripod and camera, but after a bit of sweet talk she was ready for her photo-shoot. We did get good reference photos and I plan on painting portraits of her soon. Rose is a beautiful full Arctic wolf that resides at The Wolf Sanctum here in the North Carolina mountains. JW and I went to visit Liz and the wolves again a few days ago and had a fantastic time as usual. It is one of my favorite places.

The Wolf Sanctum is a non profit facility that rescues and houses wolves and wolf dogs that have been abused, neglected or need refuge. It is also an educational facility. JW and I were both very impressed with The Wolf Sanctum upon our initial visit. The wolves have huge enclosures amidst some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. The wolves are allowed to be what they are, and the care each wolf receives is world class. The animals are happy, healthy, bright and enthusiastic. Under Liz’s careful guidance these magnificent animals flourish. JW and I hope to help this sanctuary by creating artwork that can raise money, and hopefully awareness.

Eshelokee talked JW into scritching his neck a bit.
I think that he knows that JW painted a fantastic portrait of him.

PhotoBucket Round Two...

PhotoBucket: Your Images for Sale from Jonathan Bailey on Vimeo.

Back at the very beginning of this year (January 1st to be precise) I first contacted Jonathan Bailey of Plagiarism Today regarding what to do about my works being made available for sale on PhotoBucket without my consent or knowledge or even being a member of PhotoBucket - Jonathan was very helpful and together we launched a petition to make the art community aware of this problem and to call for reform of practices by PhotoBucket Administrators. When made aware of this petition, PhotoBucket did not respond favorably.

We all had other matters to attend to at that time, and so the matter was set aside for a time but never forgotten - this new video is “Round Two” in the effort to bring attention to this issue and hopefully educate PhotoBucket users (and others) as to what they can do to make a difference. This 9-minute video created by Jonathan Bailey illustrates one of the key issues - the unauthorized printing of content without the consent of the original copyright holder, as well as offering suggestions and alternative hosting services to try.
